ABORTION: CHOICE OR MURDER? By Scott Morris |
|
On
January 22, 1973, in the case Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court of the United States
declared that abortion on demand was a constitutional right protected by the
fourteenth amendment. Since that time, National
Right to Life estimates that about 46,000,000 babies were aborted through
the year 2004. According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, there were 247 abortions for every 1,000
live births in the year 2001. That means that nearly 1 out of 5
pregnancies that year were ended by abortion. That’s 20% of all pregnancies!
In the year 1984, the ratio was as high as 364 abortions per 1,000 live
births. Abortion
is a very gruesome thing. The pictures at the following link will prove that
point. <WARNING THE PICTURES AT THE LINK
ARE VERY GRAPHIC> Click

pictures. If you look at those pictures, it becomes quite clear that even
during the first trimester (at 7 weeks) the “fetus” is unmistakably human.
Where are those that would say that it’s only a mass of tissue now? Unless
you’re totally inhuman, it is absolutely impossible to argue that it’s not a
child, even as early as seven weeks. If
we’re talking about a child, it’s obvious that Exodus 20:13 applies: “Thou
shalt not kill.” If we are talking about a child, we know that it is a matter
of murder. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. They very clearly show
a child at seven weeks. But what about before that? What does the Bible say
about that? Isaiah
44:2 tells us that God is the One that forms the child in the womb: “Thus
saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb….” From the very
beginning, God forms us. We are a creation from His at the very beginning.
But, God goes even further than that in Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed thee
in the belly I knew thee….” God knew us before He even formed us. That baby
in the womb is a precious creation of God – even before conception! God takes
this very seriously. Psalm 139:14 says, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully
and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right
well.” Anyone who thinks they could justify abortion with that in mind would
have to be insane. What
about exceptions? Many people who are “pro-life” make exceptions for rape,
incest, or saving the life of the mother. Does that line up with the
Scripture? I
will treat rape and incest together since those arguments are substantially
alike. Those who would argue for those exceptions would use the argument that
the mother was violated and that her rights were destroyed and so she
shouldn’t have to have the responsibility. Also, with incest, they’ll claim
that the baby could have serious birth defects, and they’ll use that to
justify it. As for the first argument, does the violation of the mother’s
right give a valid reason to violate the baby’s rights by murdering it?
Absolutely not! “Thou shalt not kill” still implies. As for the second
argument, if that is a valid reason, then we should round up everyone with a
major disability and kill them, too. It doesn’t sound as legitimate anymore,
does it? “Thou shalt not kill.” Saving
the life of the mother is the most commonly provided for exception. It’s
proponents say that it is justified to kill the bay to save the mother’s life.
First, allow me to say, I believe that with modern medical advancements,
there would be few if any situations where this would be necessary. Even if
it were necessary to save the mother’s life, is it justified? The king of
Israel asked a question in II Kings 5:7 that we should ask ourselves
considering this matter: “Am I God, to kill and to make alive?” It’s not our
place to choose who lives and who dies. We should not try to take the place
of God. That’s not popular, but it’s Biblical. According
to the Bible, is abortion simply a choice? No! It is murder! It is never
justified to take the life of another human being, no matter how young. One
day, this country will have to answer to God about this matter. What will you
say? |
